Long car journey with children: planning breaks and weather properly

With children, a holiday drive is less about the fastest arrival than about a calm journey: regular breaks, no driving straight through a thunderstorm and a plan for where the next toilet and snack are. Exactly these points can be set in Fahrklar before you leave.
How do I plan breaks for a long car journey with children?
Most easily with a fixed time rhythm. In Fahrklar you set it in the break settings; break planning is available from the Starter plan.
- Choose the vehicle type Convertible in the route planner. It uses car routing and fits any car journey.
- Enter start, destination and the planned departure time.
- In break planning, choose "By time", for example a break every 120 minutes, and set the minimum and maximum break length.
- Tap each suggested break, pick one of the stops shown, such as a café, restaurant or fuel station, and add the breaks to the route.
For every suggestion Fahrklar checks whether the place is open at the calculated arrival time. Fahrklar does not specifically suggest playgrounds or dog areas, but motorway service areas often have them.
How do I avoid thunderstorms and heavy rain on a holiday drive?
By checking the weather not just for start and destination, but for every section at the time you will be there. Fahrklar shows rain probability, rainfall, wind and gusts along the whole route.
From the Starter plan, Fahrklar also searches three hours before and after your desired time for the departure time at which the route stays driest, and prefers to place breaks in rain phases. The forecast covers three days ahead.
Does Fahrklar plan fuel and charging stops matched to the range?
Yes. Fahrklar plans a fuel stop before the range runs short, with a safety reserve. You can adjust your vehicle's range.
If you drive electric, Fahrklar shows EV charging stations at the start, destination and every break from the Plus plan. One click adds a charging station as a waypoint.
How do I split a very long journey over two days?
With a maximum number of kilometres per day. Fahrklar then splits the route into daily stages and suggests accommodation at the end of each stage, such as hotels, guesthouses or youth hostels.
From the Plus plan, Fahrklar also checks the route for closures and roadworks at the planned travel time. This does not replace current traffic reports, but helps you spot major roadworks while planning.

How often should you take a break on long car journeys with children?
Many families plan a break roughly every two hours, more often with small children. In Fahrklar you set the rhythm freely between 60 and 240 minutes.
Does Fahrklar have a separate car vehicle type?
No. For car journeys you choose the vehicle type Convertible. It uses car routing, a default average speed of 100 km/h and a range of 600 kilometres; you can adjust both.
Does Fahrklar show traffic jams?
No, Fahrklar does not predict traffic jams. From the Plus plan, however, Fahrklar shows closures and roadworks along the route at the planned travel time.
