Guided Tour in the Route Planner

The guided tour in the route planner explains new users what the map, a button or an option field just did, right on the interface, instead of sending them to a help page.

The tour is neither the onboarding nor the planning wizard itself: the two-step onboarding asks about your preferences once, the nine-step wizard guides you through the actual planning. The tour lays an explanation layer over exactly that wizard.

The route planner has many controls visible at once: map, vehicle type, route options, range, weather, accommodation, then several tabs with the result. Instead of explaining all of that on one long help page, Fahrklar shows the explanation exactly where it is needed — as a spotlight right over the relevant control.

Why a guided tour instead of a help page?

A help page explains every feature at once, regardless of which one is actually relevant right now. The guided tour flips that: for each step of the planner it shows only what is visible on screen at that exact moment, then disappears again.

That keeps each explanation short. If you already know the map but not what the charging-station option in the route options does, you see a short popover about exactly that, not ten paragraphs about features you already understand.

What does the tour show, step by step?

The tour is split into segments that match the route planner's steps. A segment only runs once its step is actually active:

  • Start view: clicking the map sets start, destination and stops; plus "Plan a new route", "Recently used" and the GPX/KML/KMZ import.
  • Vehicle type: motorcycle, convertible, bicycle or e-bike; for bicycle/e-bike, the fast "Quick Route" with just time and rain tolerance.
  • Start, destination & waypoints in detail: by clicking the map, address search or the location button.
  • Route options: average speed, avoiding highways/tolls/ferries, fastest instead of recommended route, showing charging stations.
  • Range, times & breaks: start time, fuel/battery range, break rhythm, maximum daily distance, "wait out rain".
  • Weather, wind & drying: driest start time, plus for motorcycle/convertible crosswind, gusts and road drying time.
  • Accommodation at the end of the day: for multi-day tours, the search for lodging in the chosen categories.
  • Result view: the Summary, Weather, Breaks and Waypoints tabs, plus how individual break suggestions are added to the route as waypoints.
  • Saving the route: saving under "My tours", GPX download and, once all requirements are met, the PDF roadbook export.

Automatic start and restarting manually

The first time you go through the planning, each segment starts automatically once its step is reached. Fahrklar remembers per segment whether it was already shown, so it does not pop up again on your next visit.

If you actively close a segment via the X, automatic playback is permanently switched off for all following steps. The tour stays reachable at any time regardless: the "Start tour" button always shows the segment of the currently active step, whether triggered automatically or manually.

Practical tips for the tour

  • On your first visit, simply click through the wizard — the matching explanation appears on its own for each step.
  • Use "Next"/"Back" or the arrow keys to go through a segment without a mouse, Esc closes it.
  • On a smartphone, the sidebar automatically expands as a bottom sheet before the tour starts, so the highlighted elements stay visible.
  • If a control is not visible right now, for example because another step is active, the tour skips it automatically and shows it later at the matching step.

Questions about this topic

Do I have to click through the whole tour once?

No. Every segment can be closed individually via the X, and the remaining steps work regardless of whether the tour was seen for them.

How do I restart the tour once I have already seen it?

Via the "Start tour" button in the sidebar header on /map. It always shows the segment of the currently active planner step, regardless of your saved progress.

Does the tour behave differently on a smartphone than on desktop?

The content is identical. On screens narrower than 640 pixels, the sidebar automatically expands as a bottom sheet before a segment starts, so the highlighted element is not hidden.
