Route Weather: How to See the Weather on Your Route

Fahrklar is a route planner with weather from Germany that shows the weather along the entire route: for every section, Fahrklar fetches its own hourly forecast, matched to the time you reach that section.

Route weather here does not mean "weather at the destination" or "rain radar over the map". It means the forecast for exactly the places you will pass during the ride, at exactly the time you get there. Classic weather apps and pure navigation apps do not answer this question.

Weather data
Hourly forecast from Open-Meteo, up to 3 days ahead
Values per section
Rain probability, rain amount, wind, gusts, temperature, visibility
Start time search
±3 hours around your preferred time

When planning a route, most people check the weather for the start and maybe for the destination. On a 250 km tour with four hours of riding, however, there are often two or three weather zones in between. Fahrklar closes this gap: it works out when you will be where and places the forecast for each section directly on the route.

What is route weather in Fahrklar?

In Fahrklar, route weather is the weather forecast along your entire route instead of for a single place. Fahrklar splits the calculated route into sections and determines the expected arrival time for each one. For exactly that hour, Fahrklar retrieves rain probability, rain amount, wind, gusts and temperature and colours the route on the map accordingly.

The difference from a normal weather app is the time axis. A weather app tells you what the weather will be like at 2 pm in Stuttgart. Fahrklar tells you what the weather will be like at 2 pm at the place where you actually are at 2 pm. On a tour lasting several hours, that is the value that matters.

How do I check the weather on my route with Fahrklar?

With Fahrklar you check the weather on your route in four steps, directly in the browser without installing anything:

  1. Enter start, destination and optional waypoints in the route planner, anywhere in Europe.
  2. Choose the vehicle type: motorcycle/convertible, bicycle or e-bike. This sets the speed and therefore the arrival time for each section.
  3. Set your preferred start time. Fahrklar also checks every start time within three hours before and after.
  4. Calculate the route: the map now shows for each section where rain, strong wind or cold is likely and suggests the driest start window.

Why does Google Maps not show weather along the route?

Google Maps does not show weather along the route because, as a navigation app, it is optimised for traffic and travel time, not for weather. At most you see the current weather at the destination. For a forecast per section you need a tool that combines travel time and weather model. That is exactly what Fahrklar does, and the finished route can be exported as GPX and used in your navigation app.

General route planners with a weather layer usually only show a weather map over the route as well. Such a map shows a single point in time. It does not tell you whether the rain front that is 80 kilometres away right now will cross your route exactly when you get there.

Does route weather also help with car journeys and trips?

Yes, route weather also helps on longer car journeys and trips, for example on the motorway to your holiday destination. Fahrklar plans with the convertible/motorcycle profile and shows you on which section heavy rain or strong gusts are expected. This is especially useful for open-top cars, for vehicles with trailers and for anyone who would rather place a break in a shower than drive straight through it.

How accurate is Fahrklar's route weather?

Fahrklar's route weather is as accurate as the underlying forecast: it is most reliable for the next 24 hours and becomes coarser towards the third day. Small-scale summer thunderstorms cannot be predicted to the kilometre even this way. On the road, the live rain radar therefore complements the planning, so you still spot short-term changes early.
