The last dry ride: how to find a weather window in October

In October the weather window for a dry motorcycle ride is shorter, but you can plan for it: set off once fog and frost have cleared (usually from late morning), be back before dusk and pick your route according to the weather pattern. In calm high-pressure weather, high ground is often sunny and mild while the valleys sit in fog.

Many riders put their bike away at the end of September, even though October often still has some really good days. The difference from summer: you can no longer just head out. But if you plan the day carefully, you can often still catch a ride with dry roads, clear views and colourful leaves.

Why October has its own rules

Three things change noticeably in October. First, day length: between the start and end of October, Central Europe loses around an hour and a half of daylight, and when the clocks go back on 25 October the sun sets an extra hour earlier in the evening.

Second, fog. In calm high-pressure weather the ground cools down strongly during long, clear nights, and cold air collects in valleys and hollows. This so-called temperature inversion means it is foggy and cool down below while it can be sunny and mild on the hills. The temperature difference can be more than ten degrees.

Third, grip. According to the German automobile club ADAC, lower road temperatures reduce tyre grip, and in the morning there is also moisture and frost. In the cold, motorcycle tyres take much longer to reach their operating temperature. So always ride the first few kilometres calmly.

The right time window: leave late, return early

In summer an early start is often ideal. In October it is usually the worst choice: roads are wet with dew, fog lies in dips and there may be frost in shady spots. Only once the sun gains strength does the fog lift and the road dry off, depending on the location in late morning or not until around midday.

At the other end of the day, dusk limits the window. From late afternoon the sun is low and dazzling, humidity rises again and the road gets colder. A good rule of thumb for October: set off when the road is dry and be home an hour before sunset.

In practice that often leaves four to six hours. That is enough for a nice day tour if the route fits. Better a shorter loop without time pressure than a long one that ends with riding home over wet leaves in the dark.

High ground or valley: choose your route by the weather pattern

Whether high ground or the valley is the better choice depends on the weather pattern. In stable high pressure with little wind it pays to climb out of the fog: roads along the ridges of low mountain ranges are then often in sunshine while the river valleys stay grey.

If a weather front passes through, however, timing matters more than altitude. Then it rains up high as well as down below, often even harder up high, and the key is to catch the gap between two rain bands. It also matters how quickly the road dries after a shower: with wind and sun it happens fast, but in forests and shady bends it stays damp for a long time.

How to find the weather window with Fahrklar

Instead of comparing several weather apps for individual places, you can check the tour as a whole. Fahrklar calculates the weather for each section of the route at the time you are expected to reach it.

  1. Create a route and enter a preferred start time, in October around midday rather than early morning.
  2. Turn on the "optimize start time" option. Fahrklar then checks three hours before and after your preferred time and suggests the driest departure.
  3. In the weather timeline, check rain probability, crosswind, glare risk from the low sun, and the grip and drying scores.
  4. Plan your breaks so that a short shower passes while you sit in a café rather than on the road.

How the optimisation works in detail and on which days it helps most is explained in the guide Optimizing start time.

Checklist for the last ride of the year

  • Check tyre pressure and tread, grip is the first thing to go in the cold.
  • Clean your visor and check the Pinlock so nothing fogs up or dazzles.
  • Pack a warm mid layer and rain gear, even if the sky is blue.
  • Check your dipped beam and rear light, dusk comes sooner than you think.
  • Plan to be back at least an hour before sunset.
  • Ride deliberately slower on the first few kilometres and in shady forest bends.

Questions about this topic

When should I start a motorcycle ride in October?

Usually not until late morning, once fog and frost have cleared and the road has dried. Aim to be back about an hour before sunset, because glare, moisture and cold increase after that.

Is it drier in the mountains or in the valley in autumn?

In calm high-pressure weather it is often drier up high: cold air and fog collect in the valleys while the ridges are sunny and mild. When a front passes through, it rains everywhere, and then timing is what counts most.

How long do motorcycle tyres need to get grip in the cold?

Much longer than in summer, especially on cold, damp roads. Ride the first few kilometres calmly and avoid steep lean angles. Brisk acceleration and braking on a straight stretch warms the tyres better than weaving.
