Fahrklar

Bike route planner with weather and headwind

The Fahrklar bike route planner calculates your cycling route and checks, for every section, what weather awaits you there at your arrival time: rain, headwind, tailwind and felt temperature.

Fahrklar is neither a navigation device nor a tour portal. It answers the question classic bike route planners leave open: when should I set off to arrive dry and with as little headwind as possible?

Try it now without an account

Enter start and destination. Fahrklar searches for the driest start window within three hours before and after your preferred time and shows the share of headwind and tailwind on the route.

No account, nothing stored: start and destination are only sent to the map and weather services for this calculation. Up to 150 km as the crow flies, forecast up to three days ahead.

Full planning comes with a free account

With the free Basic account you plan cycling routes with a map, stopovers, a weather timeline per section, headwind and tailwind, and GPX export. You can test the automatic start time optimisation 1× per week for free there. From the Starter plan it is included permanently, plus rain breaks and the elevation profile.

What is a bike route planner with weather?

A bike route planner with weather is a route planner that not only calculates the way, but also checks the weather forecast for every section of the cycling route at the time you get there.

On a bike this matters more than in a car. At 20 km/h, 60 kilometres take you three hours, and in three hours a band of rain can pass through or the wind can turn. A daily forecast for the starting point tells you nothing about that.

How does Fahrklar plan a cycling route with the weather in mind?

Fahrklar calculates the cycling route with a bicycle profile that structurally avoids motorways and splits it into sections. For each section, Fahrklar uses your pace to work out when you will be there and requests the hourly forecast for exactly that place and that hour.

The start time optimisation then checks every departure time in 15-minute steps within a window of three hours before and after your preferred time. It suggests the departure with the largest dry share of the route. The guide explains in detail how this works: Optimise your start time.

Planning headwind and tailwind on a cycling route

On a bike, headwind often costs as much effort as a long climb, but it never shows up on an elevation profile. Fahrklar splits the forecast wind for each section into the part that comes straight from the front or from behind and shows it in km/h.

In the summary you see on what percentage of the route there is at least 10 km/h of headwind or tailwind. If headwind dominates, it pays to ride the loop the other way round or to plan more time. Fahrklar also warns of gusts from 50 km/h or crosswinds from 40 km/h, for example on bridges and in forest clearings.

E-bike route planner: range and weather

For the e-bike, Fahrklar calculates with around 30 km/h and the pedelec profile. In the break planning you enter your battery range; without a value, 70 kilometres apply. A charging stop is then planned before 80 percent of that range is used up.

Wind and cold also affect the battery: headwind increases consumption, and at low temperatures the usable capacity drops. Fahrklar shows you headwind and felt temperature for each section; you adjust the range itself based on your own experience.

Planning a bike tour and avoiding rain

On a bike, the most reliable way to avoid rain is the start time, not the route. A shower usually passes in one to two hours, and leaving half an hour earlier or later is often enough to miss it.

If the rain cannot be avoided, the break planning (from the Starter plan) places a break that is due anyway in the section where the shower is expected, preferably at a café or beer garden. More on this in the guide Planning rain breaks.

Fahrklar, Komoot and Bikemap: a complement, not a replacement

Komoot, Bikemap and similar bike route planners are strong on route choice, surface, elevation gain and tour suggestions from the community. Fahrklar starts somewhere else and answers when you should ride a route.

You can combine both: export a tour planned in Komoot or Bikemap as a GPX file and import it into Fahrklar to check the weather along exactly that route. GPX import is included from the Starter plan and can be tested 1× per week in the Basic plan. You will find a detailed comparison in the guide Combining Komoot, Calimoto and Kurviger with weather.

Frequently asked questions about the bike route planner

Is the Fahrklar bike route planner free?

Yes. The bicycle is included in the permanently free Basic plan, including weather per section, headwind and tailwind, and GPX export. You can test the automatic start time optimisation 1× per week for free in the Basic plan; it is included permanently from the Starter plan. The e-bike profile is available from the Plus plan.

Can I use the bike route planner without signing up?

Yes, in the guest mode on this page. You enter start and destination and get the driest start window as well as the share of headwind and tailwind on the route. Map, stopovers, weather timeline and GPX export come with the free account.

Where does the weather data come from?

Fahrklar uses the hourly forecast from Open-Meteo, which is based on the models of national weather services such as the German Weather Service (DWD). It is requested separately for every section of the route.

Does Fahrklar also plan cycle paths and elevation?

Fahrklar calculates the route with a bicycle profile from openrouteservice that prefers cycle paths and quiet roads and avoids motorways. From the Starter plan you also see an elevation profile. For a route chosen down to the last detail, import a GPX file from Komoot or Bikemap.
